Cyclical Changes
Breast tissue is highly responsive to hormonal fluctuation throughout the menstrual cycle. In the luteal phase (post-ovulation), rising progesterone causes fluid retention in breast tissue, increasing size by as much as a cup size in some women and creating increased tenderness and firmness. This cyclical change is normal and typically resolves in the first days of menstruation. For busty women, this variation is proportionally larger and the associated discomfort — particularly under the breast and in the armpit, where accessory breast tissue sometimes sits — can be significant. A slightly larger-cupped, softer bra during this phase is more comfortable than maintaining the usual fitted style.
Menopause and Breast Changes
Menopause produces significant changes in breast tissue composition — the glandular tissue that responds to hormonal cycling is gradually replaced by fatty tissue, which is less dense and responds to gravity differently. The result is typically some degree of shape change, increased softness, and sometimes a change in bra size. Both band and cup size can change in either direction; remeasuring at this life stage is important. The shift in breast composition also changes mammography technique — post-menopausal fatty tissue is less dense and often easier to image clearly, which is one reason mammography recommendations adjust with age.
