The single most important concept in sports bra selection for larger cup sizes is the difference between encapsulation and compression support. Compression sports bras — the standard shelf-bra style that compresses breast tissue toward the chest — work reasonably well for smaller busts but are inadequate for anything above a D cup. They flatten rather than support, can cause discomfort and poor position of breast tissue over time, and provide insufficient motion control for high-impact activities.
Encapsulation sports bras have individual moulded or structured cups, like a regular bra, that hold each breast independently. This provides significantly better support, better motion control, and better long-term breast health for larger busts.
