The Complete Bra Fitting Guide — Finding Your Real Size

Most women are wearing the wrong bra size. Here's how to find yours.

Why Most Bra Sizes Are Wrong

Studies consistently suggest that between 70% and 85% of women are wearing the wrong bra size — typically a band that is too large and a cup that is too small. This happens for several reasons: bra sizing was standardized decades ago using measurement methods that don't accurately predict fit; many women were fitted by retail staff using outdated methods; and there is a widespread cultural myth that large cup sizes are unusual, which leads both fitters and wearers to resist the accurate size.

The practical consequences are significant. A bra that doesn't fit correctly fails to provide the support it's designed for, contributes to back and shoulder pain, affects posture, and looks worse under clothing than a correctly fitted bra.

How to Measure Correctly

Band size: Measure directly under your bust, where the band sits. The measurement in inches, rounded to the nearest even number, is your band size. If your measurement is odd, try both the rounded-up and rounded-down sizes. Bust measurement: Measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape parallel to the floor. Cup size: The difference between your bust measurement and your band size determines your cup size: 1 inch = A, 2 inches = B, 3 inches = C, 4 inches = D, 5 inches = DD/E, 6 inches = F, and so on. Most women are surprised by how large their cup size actually is — this is normal. UK sizing (which goes AA, A, B, C, D, DD, E, F, FF, G, GG, H...) is the most granular and useful system for larger cup sizes.

Sister Sizes and Fit Checks

Sister sizes are bra sizes that have the same cup volume but different band and cup letter combinations. If a 34F fits in the cup but the band is too tight, try a 36E — same cup volume, larger band. If the band fits but the cup is small, try a 32G — same band, more cup volume. Once you know your starting point, fit checks become intuitive. Signs your bra fits correctly: the band runs parallel to the floor all the way around; the centre gore (the piece between the cups) lies flat against your sternum; the underwire follows your breast root without sitting on breast tissue; and the cups contain all breast tissue without spillage or gaping.
