Breast Self-Examination
Regular breast self-examination — knowing your own breast tissue and noticing changes — is one of the most effective early detection practices available. The technique: perform a visual check in the mirror with arms raised and lowered, looking for changes in shape, skin texture, or nipple position; then a manual check lying down with one arm raised, using the flat of the fingers rather than the fingertips to feel systematically across the entire breast and up into the armpit. The goal is not to diagnose anything but to know your normal — so that any change is immediately apparent.
Common Conditions
The most common breast conditions that are worth knowing: Fibrocystic changes — lumpy, tender breast tissue that fluctuates with the menstrual cycle; extremely common and benign, but worth mentioning to a doctor if new or concerning. Mastitis — breast tissue infection, most common during nursing but possible at any time; requires antibiotic treatment. Fibroadenomas — benign solid tumours that feel firm and move freely; common in younger women, usually monitored rather than removed. Changes that always warrant prompt medical attention: a new lump that doesn't correspond to your cycle; nipple discharge that is bloody or occurs without squeezing; skin changes including dimpling, puckering, or orange-peel texture; and persistent pain in one area that doesn't vary with your cycle.
